Strength and Conditioning is integral part of the elite sporting world, all elite athletes utilise a Strength and Conditioning program throughout the course of their career. Strength and Conditioning programs are referred to as periodized plans, their are several approaches to periodization; varying in complexity and duration. Periodisation is used in several different forms over the course of a year, for seasonal athletes periodisation will often be split into different sections of the season: Pre season, In season and Post season. Unlike seasonal athletes, other athletes may tend to periodised their training plan for one important event such as the Olympics. Olympic athletes will have a periodised plan over a four year period, peaking the athlete for one specific event. Whereas seasonal athletes or specifically team sports athletes who have to compete on a weekly basis. Their periodization is designed to maintain performance over a sustained period of time, peeking at specific points of the season.
Strength and Conditioning not only applies to elite athletes, Strength and Conditioning is also utilised for general population; increasing physical performance and changing body composition through periodized planning. Specific periodised training interventions have reported increases in: maximal strength, muscular endurance, explosive power and sprint performance. The advantages of specific periodised plans apply to all athletes and none athletes. Changes in physical characteristics are associated with specific periodised plans, such as increase muscle mass, reductions in body fat percentage and weight loss.
